Free to read. Licensed to ship.
The library source, the docs, and the whole book are free to read on this site. Deploying Contexture in commercial work requires a license. Personal and noncommercial use is free. Two commercial tiers, both all-inclusive: the deployment right, ready-to-deploy assets, and the assistant when it ships.
The right to deploy Contexture commercially, plus the ready-to-deploy assets (recipes, templates, modules as drop-in code) and the assistant when it ships. Reading everything on-site stays free.
The library source, the docs, and the whole book are public on this site. No gate, no card, no email. You buy the license to deploy, not to read.
On purchase you get the library file plus a license key or certificate of license. No phone-home, no enforcement beacon. Honor-system for solo practitioners, contractual for agencies.

The honest answers
What counts as commercial use?
Deploying Contexture as part of paid work, on a client's site or your own commercial property, is commercial use and needs a commercial license. Reading the source, learning from it, and experimenting locally for personal or noncommercial purposes are free.
Is the book free to read?
Yes. The whole book is free to read on this site. The book is content under standard copyright, not an open license. "Free to read here" is an access grant, not permission to redistribute. Deploying the library commercially still requires a license.
Is it maintained?
It is stable and complete by design. There is no update subscription because there are no updates to subscribe to: the artifact is frozen on purpose so it never breaks a site it runs first on.
What does the agency license unlock?
The contractual right to deploy across client engagements, plus a certificate of license you can attach to each engagement. Advanced calculation patterns are documented in the book and ship with the ready-to-deploy assets.
Is there a hosted version?
No. You self-host the single file in your own tag manager and own that deployment outright. There is no service to depend on and nothing to phone home.
